Well, we have had only one week of college football played and, already, we are going to be in for some real excitement! Of the games that were played yesterday, FOUR teams ranked in the top 25 were upended. A fifth, Kansas State, was unranked but lost to an FCS team. In fact, there were a total of SEVEN FCS teams that upset FBS teams…most notably, Eastern Washington (Tony Romo’s alma mater) knocked off Oregon State.
If all of these upsets occurred in the first week, one can only imagine what is going to be happening the rest of the regular season! Even Alabama, expected by most to win their third straight BCS championship, struggled to win their first game of the season. True, they defeated Virginia Tech, 35-10, but the Crimson Tide were actually outgained by the Hokies, 212 yards to 206. Alabama benefitted from a punt return, kickoff return and an interception return for three of their touchdowns. Things don’t get any easier for Nick Saban’s team…after a week off, they were travel to College Station to take on Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel and the Texas A&M Aggies.
It looks like it is going to be another banner year for college football with several favorites to make it to the final BCS championship game.
